No central A/C until I moved out

I know some people had central air conditioners 30 years ago but not my family.

  • We never had central air conditioning.

Instead, we had one window air conditioner set up in the living room. It would only be turned on if it was close to a hundred degrees outside and, if it was still really hot at night, we would all get our sleeping bags and we would sleep in the middle of the living room floor to stay cool. The air conditioner was not powerful enough to cool all of the bedrooms. It could only cool the living room and maybe, sometimes the kitchen. In the summer the air conditioner would stay on nonstop for weeks at a time. This would cause it to literally freeze up. The back of the air conditioner would be full of frost and ice and my dad would go outside and hose it off with the garden hose and we would turn off the air conditioner for a few hours. I have no idea if that was normal or not but it was normal for my family. We have the same window air conditioning unit for a good 20 years. my mom was also careful about cooking in the summer because she didn’t want to heat up the house. We would eat a lot of salads and sandwiches in the summertime. It wasn’t until I grew up, got married, and got a house of my own that I got central air conditioning and felt the joys of having cool, comfortable air whenever and wherever I wanted in the house. My central air conditioner never freezes up either and I can use the oven without worry too.
