I am grateful that I have a private backyard because it has become my modern office space.

A few mornings ago, my sibling called me randomly at 1 in the morning because he needed a location to sleep for the night.

Thankfully, I was not asleep when he called, so I was able to absolutely accommodate him.

It was so late that I didn’t even bother to ask him the reason for the late-night call. I assumed he had a valid reason that my buddy and I could chat about the next afternoon. Anyway, when my sibling called, I was still downstairs, plus I had not gotten ready for bed yet. So, I waited for him to show up to let him inside my house. To my surprise, the first thing he said to me was that it felt hot inside my home. Now, I didn’t feel my apartment was hot at all. In fact, there are particular mornings where I adjust the temperature on the temperature control to about 75 because anything below that is too chilly for me. And before I go to bed, I will lower the temperature control between 72 plus 70 degrees. I find this to be the ideal plus most comfortable setting on my temperature control. Plus, I also use ceiling fans to circulate the air around my rooms, so at no point do I ever feel uncomfortable inside my home. But I guess my sibling is used to setting his temperature control at a odd temperature. Either way, prior to going to sleep, I told him to adjust the temperature control to his liking because I would’ve hated for him to be uncomfortable while he slept at my home. The next afternoon, he woke up before I did plus left, so I never asked him why he needed a location to crash that night.

I just found out that my neighbor installed an above ground pool in their backyard.

And but I am not fond of pools in general, I would cherish to have a small private above ground pool of my own.

I live in the South plus pools are commonplace here. Many residential homes have built-in pools, plus so do many of the apartment plus condominium complexes. Pools are a good alternative to going to the beach or to a natural Springtime. Plus, they are a good way to stay cool while in the warmer months. However, after I thought about it some more, I began to realize that the pool would cost extra money to operate. Between the pump as well as the extra water, I believe that could be a hefty increase on my electric bill. However, if I had a pool, it would mean that I would use my Heating plus A/C less for staying cool. But I am not sure if the money that I would save from not using my Heating plus A/C device would be enough to offset the additional cost of the pool. Initially, having a pool sounded like a good idea, however obviously, this is something that I will need to contemplate. Unless I am willing to just absorb the extra cost of the pool, plus not believe about its impact on my electric bill, after that I should be fine. For now, I will shelve the pool idea for now plus stick with my Heating plus A/C device to remain cool in my home. After all, my Heating plus A/C device won’t cost me extra money to operate.

My sibling invited me to spend the night inside his off-grid apartment a few times, but I am yet to take him up on that invitation

My sibling finally decided to make the leap plus live off-grid. This is something that he has been talking about for years. He loves the idea of living outside of the town away from the hum plus buzz of everyday life. He is also a minimalist who believes that my buddy and I don’t need much to survive. While I am not against a minimalist lifestyle, it is something that I would have to get used to. After all, there are particular luxuries that I have had for most of my life that I am not willing to give up. One such luxury is central air conditioning. When I believe about living off-grid that’s the first thing that pops into my mind – no a/c. While discussing off-grid living with my sibling, he did mention that some of the homes are equipped with air conditioning. And though it’s not a full Heating plus A/C unit, some homes do have particularly comfortable climate control. For instance, he installed a ductless mini split cooling system inside his off-grid home. He powers it using solar panels, which he said runs the cooling system well even on the hottest of mornings! Not that I don’t feel my sibling, however my worst fear is to be stuck inside one of these off-grid houses without a working cooling system. It’s just one of those luxuries that I need to have for comfort. My sibling invited me to spend the night inside his off-grid apartment a few times, but I am yet to take him up on that invitation. Perhaps, I will wait until the weather gets a bit cooler outside, where my buddy and I won’t need the cooling system to remain comfortable inside his off-grid home.

Needless to say, since then

Now that the Summer is right around the corner, I have been thinking about preparing for the warmer months ahead. Every year, I have a checklist of things that I do around this time of year to make sure that my Summer comes and goes without any hiccups. The one year that I neglected my checklist, I had the worst 48 hours that I could’ve imagined. Two years ago, I decided to skip getting my HVAC device maintained. And unbeknownst to me, that Summer ended up being one of the hottest on record. If I knew that the Summer would be that brutal, I would’ve figured out a way to schedule my HVAC repair appointment. Well, I chose not to and that year, my HVAC device broke down in June on a day where the uneven temperatures hit a high of 102 degrees. It was a record for the state that I live in and turns out, I wasn’t the only person who ended up with a broken a/c on that day. When I called my HVAC provider for emergency service, I was told that it would take 48 hours before an HVAC company could repair my unit, but due to the heat, I decided that I should sleep in a hotel, however nothing was available for a reasonable price. So, I did the next best thing and bought a fan because I think that it would’ve helped to bring some relief. It did not, and for 48 hours, I was annoyed due to the heat. Needless to say, since then. I have never skipped my HVAC appointment. In fact, aside from changing my air filter, scheduling an HVAC repair is one of the first things I do to prepare for the warmer weather.
