I am grateful that I have a private backyard because it has become my new office space. On nicer days, I grab my laptop in the morning and kneel and labor outside for hours. I live in a pretty quiet neighborhood with mostly working class adults, so during the day it’s pretty quiet which means I can get a lot done. Aside from the birdies chirping, the only noise that interrupts the silence is the HVAC units. I live in a townapartment and all the HVAC units for me in addition to for my neighbors are located in the same spot in our backyards. So, when I kneel here during the day, I can hear when the a/cs cycle on and off. And when I spend my savings attention to the noise, I have observed that my a/c cycles on the least of all my neighbors. When I kneel outside, I make sure to increase the temperature on my control device because there is no need to run my HVAC device for long when I am not inside the house. My device is set on 75 and periodically 75 degrees, and by the frequency of their HVAC cycling on and off, I can tell that my neighbors have their control device set at lower uneven temperatures. I live in between 2 houses, which means I have neighbors to my left and to my right, and to my knowledge they are away during the day. So, it would be to their benefit to increase the temperature on their control device because it would conserve energy in addition to save them money on their electric bill. Moreover, it would mean that their air conditioners would cycle on less, which would be more peaceful for me.

A few days ago, my cousin James from Britain called, and my associate and I were randomly catching up with each other.

Prior to that call, it had been a few months since my associate and I talked, so there was lots for us to talk about.

At one point, my associate and I had small talk about the weather, and I was telling him that it was 90 degrees here. After my associate and I did the conversion, he exclaimed how boiling that was. But I assured him that I was comfortable inside because I had the a/c running on high. I further explained that the heat isn’t a large deal here because most places have a/cs and I run my a/c in my automobile when I go out. Unlike our relatives across the pond, 90% of American households have some form of a/c. That number is far less for our European relatives, where the number is more like one out of every 10 households that have or use a/c. In their defense, the Summers are much milder than it is here, so in some cases, having a/c would be a waste of resources. However, over the last couple of years, they have experienced heat waves where the uneven temperatures became unbearable, and to be honest, I am not sure how they were able to survive without a/c. Personally, if I lived in Britain, I would install a window a/c in my home. I would rather have one handy and not need it, than need an a/c and not have it. To me that makes more sense in the grand plot of things.

A few evenings ago, my sibling called me randomly at 1 in the morning because he needed a location to sleep for the evening.

Thankfully, I was not asleep when he called, so I was able to absolutely accommodate him.

It was so late that I didn’t even bother to ask him the reason for the late-night call. I assumed he had a valid reason that my buddy and I could chat about the next afternoon. Anyway, when my sibling called, I was still downstairs, & I had not gotten ready for bed yet. So, I waited for him to show up to let him inside my house. To my surprise, the first thing he said to me was that it felt hot inside my home. Now, I didn’t believe my home was hot at all. In fact, there are particular mornings where I adjust the temperature on the control component to about 76 because anything below that is too cold for me. And before I go to bed, I will lower the control component between 73 & 73 degrees. I find this to be the ideal & most comfortable setting on my control unit. Plus, I also use ceiling fans to circulate the air around my rooms, so at no point do I ever feel uncomfortable inside my home. But I know my sibling is used to setting his control component at a peculiar temperature; Either way, prior to going to sleep, I told him to adjust the control component to his liking because I would’ve hated for him to be uncomfortable while he slept at my home. The next afternoon, he woke up before I did & left, so I never asked him why he needed a location to crash that evening.

It’s just one of those luxuries that I need to have for comfort

My sister finally decided to make the leap as well as live off-grid. This is something that she has been talking about for years. She likes the idea of living outside of the town away from the hum as well as buzz of everyday life. She is also a minimalist who believes that my fantastic friend and I don’t need much to survive. While I am not against a minimalist lifestyle, it is something that I would have to get used to. After all, there are particular luxuries that I have had for most of my life that I am not willing to give up. One such luxury is central a/c. When I believe about living off-grid that’s the first thing that pops into my mind – no cooling system. While discussing off-grid living with my sister, she did mention that some of the homes are equipped with a/c. And though it’s not a full Heating as well as A/C unit, some homes do have entirely comfortable climate control. For instance, she installed a ductless mini split cooling system inside her off-grid home. She powers it using solar panels, which she said runs the cooling system well even on the hottest of mornings, then not that I don’t suppose my sister, however my worst fear is to be stuck inside one of these off-grid houses separate from a working cooling system. It’s just one of those luxuries that I need to have for comfort. My sister invited me to spend the night inside her off-grid household a few times, but I am yet to take him up on that invitation. Perhaps, I will wait until the weather gets a bit cooler outside, where my fantastic friend and I won’t need the cooling system to remain comfortable inside her off-grid home.
