I wasn’t used to living in the desert, and needed more AC.

I was told that living in Arizona meant the temperatures were warmer, but you didn’t mind it as much because it was a dry heat. I’m not sure who came up with it, because I thought it was hot. I knew it was over 100 degrees, and I was having a tough time with it. I wanted better air conditioning than what I currently had, and I wanted some humidity in the house. I was told I could have a humidifier separate from the air conditioning, but there were AC unit with humidity installed right into it. I laughed, because it sounded like what my father called a swamp cooler. I called the HvAC company and told them I needed a new AC unit and I wanted one that put humidity into my home. I was tired of hair that flew in the air, and clothing that stuck to my skin. My skin was dry and sallow, and I needed humidity. The HVAC company looked at the air conditioner that was already in the house, and said they had the same model in stock. It didn’t take long for them to swap out the air conditioning units and get me some cool air. I hated going without air conditioning, even for a few days. Say what you will, but when the temperatures are over 100 degrees, it is hot with or without humidity, and you need air conditioning if you are going to survive. I don’t like heat, but I liked my husband and I didn’t want to live away from him. He worked in Arizona now, and we had air conditioning to keep me comfortable.

They put lockboxes over the thermostats.

I got home from work last week, and there was a lockbox over the thermostat in my apartment.

I didn’t know if I was upset about the lockbox, or that someone was in my apartment when I wasn’t there. No one had the right to enter my apartment without notice. I called the superintendent and asked who was in my apartment while I was gone. He said he been there, and he had installed lockboxes over all the thermostats in the apartment building. The owner of the building was complaining about the energy use, and he thought it was from the HVAC system. He set all the thermostats at sixty-six, and the lockboxes prevented the tenants from changing the temperatures. I was freezing that night, and remembered my dad had given me a space heater for Christmas. I took it out of the closet and plugged it in. For the first time in a week, I slept comfortably because I was warm. I was sure I was going to get something from the superintendent because I was using more electricity, but I heard nothing. Instead of breaking the lockbox and turning up the thermostat, I was getting warm with my space heater. I even ended up going to the store and buying two more space heaters for the rest of the apartment. The owner of the apartment building didn’t want us using his furnace to stay warm, so I got smart and used space heaters, along with most of the other tenants. When I said something about the space heaters to my friend, she spread the word, and the local home center was soon our of space heaters.

It wasn’t my decision to go to HVAC school.

I was doing lousy in HVAC school, and my instructor pulled me aside.

  • He told me I was doing excellent when I first started, and he wanted to know what had changed.

I told him nothing had changed. It was easy then, but it was getting harder. He said that nothing easy was worthwhile. If you had to work for something, it made it all the more important, and you felt like you accomplished something. I turned around and asked him what he knew about it. It wasn’t my decision to go to HVAC school. My father forced me to come here so he could have me in his HVAC company. He wanted an HVAC technician who was his son so he had someone to give the HVAC company to. The HVAC instructor looked at me, and told me to quit. He didn’t care if I was giving away a good career, but it was my decision to quit. He wouldn’t force me to stay or make me feel bad if I left. I got up and started to walk out the door, but something made me turn around. The instructor had my paperwork on his desk, and he was checking something off. I walked back and looked at what he was doing. I had nearly perfect scores in the HVAC classes, and I was throwing it away. I sat down and asked if I could stay in the class? My instructor asked if this was my choice, or if he had convinced him. I told him I could be an excellent HVAC technician if I tried, and I wanted to try.

Don’t give up before you start.

I told my son he had a defeatist attitude. Even before he started a project,he was already complaining about hard it was going to be, and he would never get it done. He was working on his senior project, and he opened up the packet. He said it looked impossible to complete, and kept staring at the paperwork. I tried to show him how to separate the different papers to make it into several smaller projects, but he yelled he couldn’t do it and went to his bedroom. The paperwork was still sitting on the dining room table. After graduation, he said he wanted to go to HVAC school. He got all the paperwork, and asked if I knew everything that was involved in HVAC. Of course I knew what was involved in HVAC. I was an HVAC technician, and I had gone through the classes. I told him I would help him in any way possible, but he shook his head. He asked if I also had to take certification classes and pass the test. I explained there were two HVAC classes, which was prep for the HVAC certification exam. You would think it was created just to make him angry. After listening to him whine for about an hour, I took the paperwork and threw it in the trash. His mouth dropped open and he stared at me like I had grown a third eye. He wanted to know what I was doing. I told him he couldn’t give up on HVAC before he started, so I was taking the choice out of his hands. If he was too lazy to work, then he could move out, but I was tired of his idiotic attitude. Two weeks later, he started HVAC school.

If I needed a new furnace; I want ductless HVAC.

My husband and I were talking about how badly the furnace had been working lately.

Even before we called the HVAC company, we had already made a decision.

If we were told we needed a new furnace, we were going to switch over to ductless HVAC. We were tired of having unsightly ductwork hanging in the basement. Every time we went down there, someone hit their head on the ductwork. Less than a month ago, a friend of ours needed sixteen stitches because of how badly he had gashed his head on the ductwork. I wanted it gone, and so did my husband. All we needed was a hint that we needed a new furnace, and we were ready to pounce. The poor HVAC technician wouldn’t know what was coming at him, we would be talking about ductless HVAC so quickly. I was disappointed when the HVAC technician told us the furnace was fine, and all he could find was a clogged air filter. Had we waited much longer without changing the air filter, we would have needed a new furnace. We would have caused the furnace to overheat and it could have cracked the heat exchanger. I looked at my husband, trying to see if he hadn’t changed the air filter on purpose, but I couldn’t read the expression on his face. We were eating dinner, when he apologized. He guessed it was wrong to pray for a broken furnace. He really wanted to get a new ductless HVAC system. I told him that all he had to do was say so, and we would have ordered it and had the furnace removed.
